Harnessing offshore wind resources for the generation of electricity is argued to be the next big frontier of energy resource exploration. For many its new. For Genesis it has been on the cards since the mid-2000’s. A Genesis consortium was awarded a tender to develop a 20MW near-offshore wind project at a major SA Metro. This move was too early it seemed, but it provided us the base to learn about offshore resources and the construction dynamics that went with it.

Now more than 15 years later, offshore wind projects are in full swing across the globe. Once the sole purveys of the oil and gas industry, offshore marine based exploration is now a major focus for wind energy developers on almost every continent. And it makes sense. As contestation for good onshore wind sites reaches fever pitch, the move to offshore wind is intensifying.

In SA, Genesis once again is pioneering the move into new unchartered local waters.
The World Bank and IFC identify South Africa as one of the key emerging markets for global expansion. The University of Stellenbosch has also published some good work on the nature of the offshore resources available. The potential is there. The resource is there. The skills and expertise too.

Genesis and Hexicon have teamed up to deliver offshore wind projects aimed at powering South Africa’s economy, contributing to localisation, re-tooling, and re-purposing some of the already existing technical marine skills base in SA, and helping high carbon intensity industries lower their carbon footprint at the same time.

We believe this is an industrialisation opportunity that South Africa is well positioned to capitalise on.
